Suspense and Tension in Brian De Palmas film The Untouchables During the 1920s many people were unemployed because of the poor economic conditions in America and to make it worse, were drinking to make their lives more tolerable. The government decided to ban the sale and drinking of alcohol, this was period was called The Prohibition. People continued to want to drink and this lead people to go to illegal bars or speakeasies which sprang up all over America. Gangsters such as Al Capone and others saw this as an opportunity to make money by transporting and supplying alcohol to the them.. As a result they became so wealthy and well organised that during the 1930s a special police unit wasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The arrest of the bookkeeper should be fairly easy but Ness finds himself in with for reasons. Being a caring person he is helps a woman struggling to bring her baby up the stairs. While doing this Ness recognizes one of the gang members, taking out his gun he single-handedly defeats all the members of the gang while at the sam e time protecting the baby. Ness and Stone walk out the station unharmed and with the bookkeeper. Brian de Palma has used a variety of sound techniques to create a feeling of suspense and tension for the audience. Dialogue, sounds effects, ambient sounds and non-diegetic sounds have all been used to reinforce what the audience see. The content of the station scene is expressed through Nesss dialogue. He informs the audience of what is happening by what he says to other characters on and off screen. Sound effects have also used successfully to add realism so the audience can believe that what theyre seeing is actually happening. Non-diegetic sounds also played a big part in the station scene. It changes the mood of the audience from feeling excited to feeling tense and uncomfortable. First there were drums which made the audience feel Nesss tension as he tried to find the bookkeeper. Mobile music is then added, creating more tension showing now that Ness

Janelle Lebron Professor Christine Reeves English 101 22 November 2014 Just Walk On By vs. Girl Short stories, novels, and even articles today usually hold a meaning that can be rewritten in many different ways, but still gets the deeper gist of the story. It does not matter if the story is fiction or based on actual events, the message that is meant to get across will almost effortlessly. Just Walk On By and Girl are unlike in minor and immense ways, a couple significant differences are the time period and the narratorââ¬â¢s gender. In spite of the differences, Just Walk On By and Girl show very important similarities which are the longing to fit into social standards and how African Americanââ¬â¢s are treated by others. Together theseâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The narrator of Just Walk On By is a male and the narrator of Girl is a female. Gender becomes a problem in comparing these two articles if you role reverse the situation. If it was a girl walking home, instead of a male in the story referenced in Just Walk On By, night walkers would not be scared or nervous to cross paths. A female is occasionally looked upon as harmless while a male could be dangerous. Taking into thought genders can also provide a better understand of the point of view the narrator is coming from. A female usually tends to understand other females better than a male would and vice versa. Genders can be the reason the reader fully understands a narratorââ¬â¢s feelings in the passage or not. In conclusion, many stories are going to have differences and similarities, but all that is going to matter is the general purpose of the reading. Some stories will even be fiction, but manage to still have a lovely concept behind it that will stick with a reader. Stories with such diverse and cultural meanings are timeless classics for many readers to enjoy. Just Walk On By and Girl have pronounced differences that are to be taken into consideration while comparing the two articles.
